Working with GMB Politicians

GMB was delighted to see an increase in the number of Labour MEPs (a good number of whom are GMB members), but the bad news is that UKIP is now the largest UK party in the European Parliament. This party is no friend to trade unions. If you don't know what their policies are on public services, employment rights, equal opportunities and trade union freedoms, you might want to take a look

As your GMB MEPs we remain committed to fighting for the rights of workers across the UK.

Unemployment remains too high throughout Europe and even those in employment face uncertainty and poor working conditions.

You can't trust the Tories or UKIP with employment rights in the UK. Indeed, both parties voted AGAINST the inclusion of a social dimension in the European Commission's Work Programme. As usual, the Tories fail to understand the devastating effects of the economic crises on working people.

As your Labour representatives we will continue to push for European legislation that protects workers. Many people don't realise how many of their rights at work come from EU legislation, such as four weeks paid holidays, rights to maternity and paternity leave and equal treatment for agency and part time workers. The Tories want to negotiate these rights away by taking us out of the EU. It is more important than ever that we protect these rights and push for further legislation to improve working conditions.

Your Labour MEPs have called on the Commission to commit to tackling the issue of zero hour contracts, which have had an incredibly negative impact on the lives of thousands of people in the UK. We have also demanded a full revision of the posted workers directive to stop wages from being undercut.

The Tories would see the UK workforce take part in a race to the bottom in a rule-free market. British workers deserve better and we will continue to stand up for the rights and conditions of employees in the UK and across Europe.
