Creating a 'Click to WhatsApp' link

As a union our activists are our greatest weapon, so making it as easy as possible for activists to get involved, and for non-active members to get active, in a campaign is vital. Therefore, the ability to get someone to send something to a friend or to share something on social media at the click of a link or button is a tool too great to not use.

This page will teach you how to quickly and easily produce a ‘click to WhatsApp' link - so you can get people to send personal messages to others at the click of a button.

Building a 'click to WhatsApp' link

WhatsApp is a powerful tool for us because it allows us to communicate with members in a really bespoke way so instead of it feeling like they are talking to a large and distant entity, it can be more personal and private - and with most members only contacting us because of a private and often worrying issue WhatsApp is ideal.

Think of WhatsApp as a key tool to help mobilise members in the workplace or for a campaign.

Step One

Write exactly what you want someone to send in the box below - and don't forget to double check for spelling. Remember, this is not a message from you, it’s a personal message so write it as if the person you wish to send it is sending. It’s also good to include some kind of action, whether its a link to a website to sign something or to share something on social media. If you are writing a message for someone to send to a specific number, presumably to someone in GMB so they can sign up for something, then the only action it would need is for them to, in some way, confirm they are happy to sign up.

Here is an example WhatsApp message you could ask someone, in this case to a colleague at a warehouse in Stockport, to send to colleagues who are not members:

Hi, just messaging you to encourage you to join the GMB Union. Being a member means you’re entitled to a whole load of benefits - not to mention protections at work! You can join on the website here https://www.gmb.org.uk/join/join-online or grab me at work and we can discuss and I can give you a form. Thanks!

Add your text to the box below and click 'Encode' when you're ready

Step Two

Now with the code you have created in the box above you need to decide what type of WhatsApp message you would like someone to send. To send to someone in their contacts already or to send to a specific number of your choice:

Option One

If you would like them to send it to someone in their contacts copy your code from step one and paste it in the box below so it follows, without a space, the link already in the box.

Option Two

If you would like them to send a message to a specific number then first of all you need to change the number in the box below to the number you would like them to send the message to (it is currently 447738958142 - the GMB comms phone).

Make sure to include the 44 at the begining and lose the 0 as that tells WhatsApp it is a UK number. Then copy your code from step one and paste it in the box below so it follows, without a space, the link already in the box.

Step Three

The above code can now be copied and pasted into your web browser and will work as a link.  However, because this is quite long it may be better, unless you are hyperlinking into a button in an email or on a webpage, to shorten this link using https://bitly.com/
