British Gas Customers Face Cold Winter as GMB Ballots for Strike Action over Bullying Claims

Thursday, November 9, 2017

This will affect British Gas customers who need a boiler servicing, or any repair or installation, says union.

British Gas customers could be facing a cold winter after GMB, the union for energy workers, began a strike ballot over bullying claims.

Members in the North West, who repair and service boilers as well as installing and servicing the ‘Hive' system, will receive their ballot papers today.

The ballot will end at 12noon on November 22.

The dispute centres over three GMB senior reps who have been suspended since August 8 on allegations of bullying.

The company are acting on complaints allegedly made by employees that they felt bullied and intimidated by open comments made on WhatsApp.

British Gas says it has taken statements from four engineers whose identity they have kept a secret.

If the disciplinaries are upheld as gross misconduct; the reps face dismissal.

George Patterson, GMB Organiser, said:

“GMB is disappointed the company have treated the union reps in this way.

“Due to the company’s unwillingness to try and resolve the issue through dialogue, we now feel we have no alternative.

“To address the wishes of GMB members; whose reps are suspended, we must give them the opportunity to show solidarity and support for their representatives.

"Should any industrial action follow as a result of the workforce ballot this will affect British Gas customers who need a boiler servicing, any repair or installation and will also affect any installation or servicing of the Hive system.

“GMB believes this is a direct attack the union and its members.”
