GMB Scotland Slams ‘Shameful’ Cordia’s ‘Pay Cut By Post’ Plan

What Cordia has done here is nothing short of shameful says GMB Scotland

GMB Scotland has branded a calculated move by Cordia management to drive down the wages of care workers as ‘utterly shameful’.

Thirty-six workers in the Glasgow City Council arms-length organisation’s reablement team received notification by post on Saturday morning that their pay would be downgraded by up to £1400 a year and all monies earned on their existing job specification would be recouped by the employer.

The cynical move follows a year-long grievance between GMB Scotland members and Cordia over pay parity for all home care workers employed on ‘seven days on / seven days off’ contracts of employment.

GMB is campaigning for all home carers providing seven-days-a-week provision to be upgraded from 19 points to 21 points in their job specification.

GMB Scotland Organiser Louise Gilmour said: “What Cordia has done here is nothing short of shameful, an attempt to suppress our members' long-standing campaign for pay parity by driving down wages for everyone.

Unnecessary fear and panic among our members in the reablement team has been stoked by the prospect of a significant amount of money being cut from their incomes, as you would expect if you woke-up on Saturday morning to open a letter from your employer stating as much.

Our message to our members is clear: Do not agree, respond to or sign anything connected to this threat as we are working with our lawyers to check the legality of Cordia’s actions.

They should also be assured that GMB will respond aggressively to this and resist any attempt by Cordia to cut our hard-working members’ terms and conditions.”
