This is a race to the bottom and forcing more public sector workers to go to food banks is not the way to improve our NHS services says union.
GMB, the union for NHS staff, says a hospital’s plan to privatise services will ‘crush’ pay and conditions for workers.
On Friday, Airedale NHS Foundation Trust wrote to staff confirming its decision to set up a private company to run facilities, estates and purchasing at its hospital in Keighley.
Airedale’s privatisation plan was described as a ‘VAT scam’ in Parliament by Keighley MP John Grogan, while Leader of the House of Commons, the Rt. Hon Andrea Leadsom, said the decision of as “concerning”.
GMB warns the Trust will use the opportunity of moving staff over to the new company as an excuse to impose inferior terms and conditions and all future employees will be given lower pay which is no more than a race to the bottom.
Pete Davies, GMB Senior Organiser, said:
“We’ve seen this kind of thing before – it’s the bean counters spotting a way to save money.
“But the Trust also clearly sees it as an opportunity to crush terms and conditions for the lowest paid employees.
“It’s set out in black and white in the Trust’s proposed measures.
“GMB simply cannot and will not accept that for our members or for any future employees.
“This is a race to the bottom and forcing more public sector workers to go to food banks is not the way to improve our NHS services.
“This proposal needs to be binned now.”
