Amazon Wage Announcement 'Robbing Peter To Pay Paul'

Union’s members claim they’ll lose out on £1000s due to ‘stealth tax on wage rise’              

GMB, the union for Amazon workers, hit out at the global retail giant after it emerged a pay increase announced yesterday for its workforce would be offset by the removal of employee share and incentive schemes, costing some workers £1,500 in a single year. [1]

Amid much fanfare, Amazon announced an increase to minimum wage rates of £10.50/hour for workers in London, and £9.50/hour for those outside London.

But employees at Amazon warehouse sites across the country have been left seething after the companies public relations effort failed to mention the significant cut to their income.

GMB Member in Amazon Milton Keynes:

“This pay rise is just a scam – they’re taking away our share option as well as our Christmas bonuses. We all reckon we’ll be worse off.

“Everyone is fuming about it.”

GMB Member in Amazon Rugeley:

“We are going to be out of pocket by a good few quid– that’s what all the lads are saying.”

GMB has long campaigned for Amazon to pay a decent wage and address the working conditions in its warehouses, citing stories from members - almost 90% of whom say they are in constant pain at work - but the company refuses to recognise the union or get round the negotiating table. 

Tim Roache, GMB General Secretary, said: 

“Amazon did their PR blitz yesterday without mentioning a dicky bird about cutting staff benefits.

“This is a basically a stealth tax by the employer on its own wage increase - a clear case of robbing Peter to pay Paul.

“Meanwhile, workers still graft in horrific conditions to impossible targets and Amazon refuse to listen to or engage with a trade union.

“If Jeff Bezos – the richest man in the world – really wants to give hardworking staff a payrise he should let them keep their share options as well as increasing their hourly rate.”
