GMB Members To Participate In Union Campaign Against Austerity At Over 80 Locations Across Britain From 17th June To 5th July

Aim is to mobilise opposition to austerity and promote positive ideas for creating jobs, protecting our NHS, investing in our young people, bringing our high streets back to life and delivering a living wage says GMB

GMB members will actively participate in campaign events in over 80 locations across Britain as a part a national trade union organized campaign against austerity which will run from 17th June till 5th July.   See notes to editors for the daily schedule for the campaign in England, Wales and Scotland from 17th June till 5th July.

The TUC will start with an Austerity Uncovered bus from Monday 17 June, with the first stop in Dudley in the West Midlands. At the same time, the Wales and Scottish TUCs will run their own Austerity Uncovered buses. Then from Saturday 22 June to Friday 5 July a coalition of unions - Unite, Unison, GMB, PCS and CWU along with the TUC - will criss-cross England with two People United buses. These will start in London from the People's Assembly, at Central Hall Westminster on 22 June and end on 5 July at Trafford hospital - the birthplace of the NHS.

Paul Kenny GMB General Secretary said “Three years into the government's flawed austerity experiment with the economy, and with further cuts threatened for the rest of the decade, the unions will be capturing the effect of this on the real communities of the country.

The aim is to mobilise opposition to austerity and to promote positive ideas for creating jobs, protecting our NHS, investing in our young people, bringing our high streets back to life and delivering a living wage.

The unions will use the tour to win support for tackling corporate welfare in housing and low pay where vast amounts of taxpayers is cash used to subsidise private landlords and low paying employers via housing benefits and working families tax credits.

The tour will provide an opportunity to explain how more than 80,000 new homes could be built in Great Britain each year if just half the total of £22,812m that was spent on housing benefit in 2011/12 is spent instead on investment in new social housing.  Much of the £411billions of taxpayer’s funds spent on housing benefit in last 30 years has been funnelled to private landlords and this “corporate” welfare should end.

Along the way unions will be able to point to profitable companies like NEXT and Amazon that should be forced to pay a living wage. The tour will be used to step up the campaign to stop companies abusing zero hours contacts, prevent them from exploiting temporary workers and stop them recruiting only from abroad. We will win support for the corporate sector paying their fair share of taxes”
