GMB demands Kamerun Yuksek’s immediate release and calls on Foreign Secretary to intervene.
The Co-chair of the Kurdish Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Kamuran Yuksek, has been arrested and imprisoned after speaking at the launch of the trade union campaign to free Abullah Ocalan in the House of Commons on April 25th and making a statement to the press.
Mr Yuksek was apprehended on the evening of May 10th after a warrant was issued by the public prosecutor in Diyarbakir. His house and office were raided by the police.
Bert Schouwenburg, GMB International Officer, said “Mr Yuksek is merely the latest in a long line of journalists, trade unionists, human rights defenders and politicians who have been targeted for daring to speak out against the dictatorial instincts of President Erdogan. It is simply disgraceful that he has been arrested for denouncing the violence being directed against the Kurdish population and we demand his immediate release.
At the launch of our Freedom for Ocalan campaign he spoke eloquently of the need for a peaceful settlement to the Kurdish question. We shall be calling on the Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, to summon the Turkish Ambassador to a meeting in order to elicit a full explanation of why a campaigner for peace and reconciliation has been treated so disrespectfully.”
