Arsenal Should Pay £9.40 Living Wage

Wednesday, November 4, 2015

GMB To Join Lobby Of Arsenal Fans On Sunday 8th November To Put Pressure On Club To Pay £9.40 Living Wage To Staff And Contractors

Arsenal is a very wealthy football club with stars paid millions per year and it can afford to pay cleaners, caterers and security staff a living wage says GMB.

GMB will join a lobby of Arsenal fans before the game with Spurs on Sunday 8th November outside the Emirates Stadium to get Arsenal to pay £9.40 per hour London Living wage to staff and contractors.

The lobby, organized by the Living Wage Foundation, supported by Islington Council and  Arsenal fans campaigning for the catering, cleaning and security contractors at Arsenal FC to be paid the London living Wage, will see leaflets distributed explaining that the London living wage figure was raised by 25p to £9.40 per hour this week and asking them to put pressure on the club to pay this wage to all their staff and contract staff.

The details of the lobby are as follows:

From 2.30pm Sunday 8th November,

Outside all sides of the Emirates Stadium,

Hornsey Rd,

London N7 7AJ

Gary Doolan, GMB member and Arsenal fan, said “On Monday 2nd November it was announced that the London Living Wage increased from £9.15 to £9.40 per hour. This is a rise of 2.7 per cent, and the rate reflects the higher costs of living in London.

The number of employers claiming to pay their staff the London Living Wage has grown from 429 to 724 in the last 12 months. There are questions over these numbers as some of these employers do not extend payment to contractors who often make up the majority of the lower paid staff running these organizations.

GMB want to see fans of Arsenal putting pressure on the club to pay £9.40 per hour to all staff and contractors. Fans must reject the view put forward by Arsenal last year that “ultimately regulation of labour markets is a matter for government not football clubs”.

Arsenal is a very wealthy football club with stars paid millions per year and it can afford to pay cleaners, caterers and security staff a living wage.”
