GMB Condemns Attempted Grenade Murder of Union Leader

Thursday, March 16, 2017

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson must urgently address violence with Colombian Ambassador says union.

GMB has condemned the attempted assassination of a Colombian trade union leader.

Medardo Cuesta narrowly escaped death when his bullet proof car was destroyed by a grenade.

Mr Cuesta, treasurer of GMB’s sister trade union SINTRAINAGRO, had left the vehicle to enter his union’s offices in Ciénaga, in the province of Magdalena, minutes before attackers hit his blacked out vehicle.

It is the fourth assassination attempt on Mr Cuesta during his 25 years as union leader.

Despite the signing of a peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC guerrillas, extra-judicial killings have continued apace.

A total of 120 community activists have been killed in the last 14 months, 30 of them coming this year.

Bert Schouwenburg, GMB International Officer, said:

“This latest attack on our Colombian trade union colleague is completely unacceptable.

“The Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, who was so keen to support both the EU free trade deal and the UK bilateral agreement with Colombia, must make the strongest protests to their ambassador in London about this latest outrage.

“He must demand that every effort is made to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“SINTRAINAGRO unequivocally supported the peace process in Colombia.

“The least their government could do in return is guarantee their safety to go about the legitimate business of representing their members.”
