GMB Members At Bakkavor Pizza Harrow To Be Balloted For Strike Action In Pay Dispute
GMB members have tolerated below inflation increases in pay for the last four years while, ensuring that the business has thrived and continues to make profit.
600 GMB members at Bakkavor Pizza in Park Royal are to be balloted for strike action in a dispute over pay. The result of the ballot will be known on Wednesday 29th January 2014.
Bakkavor has contracts to supply pizza to four of the UK’s biggest High Street supermarkets: Sainsburys, Tesco, Waitrose and M&S.
In November 2013 GMB members rejected a 2.5% increase on the basic rate and shift premiums, and £60.00 Christmas Bonus in a consultative ballot. GMB has notified Bakkavor of the result and that a formal ballot for industrial action would commence. GMB and the company have attended at conciliation service, ACAS.
At last ditch negotiations on 8th January, 2014, despite GMB being given assurances that significant improvements would be made, the Company tabled an “improved” offer of a £10.00 voucher to be used in the Company’s Staff Shop.
Tony Warr, Senior Organiser said “Offering a £10.00 voucher to be spent in the Staff Shop will be considered as an insult by GMB members. GMB members have tolerated below inflation increases in pay for the last four years while, ensuring that the business has thrived and continues to make profit.
The industrial action ballot will commence very shortly and GMB fully expects its members to support the call for action. This is not a militant workforce, far from it, but they are not prepared to accept such a derisory improvement.
The terms of reference for the ACAS meeting have clearly been overlooked. GMB had agreed to sit down with Bakkavor management and put on hold the strike action ballot, on the basis that any improvement would be significant.”
