Strike Ballot On 24th Nov At Haribo Confectionery Pontefract In Dispute Over Compulsory Working Over Christmas Period
Members have had enough of the company’s attitude of imposing conditions irrespective of what we have agreed, or what member’s family arrangements are says GMB.
A ballot for official strike action will commence on 24th November for 270 GMB members employed by Haribo Confectionery in Pontefract in a dispute over compulsory working over the Christmas period. The ballot will be open for a 2 week period. See notes to editors for a copy of the press release issued by GMB on 5th November on the dispute.
Steve Huckerby, GMB Regional Organizer, said “This dispute has been caused by the company dictating to its employees rather than co-operating with them. Members have had enough of the company’s attitude of imposing conditions irrespective of what we have agreed, or what member’s family arrangements are.
GMB suggested to the company some time ago to ask for volunteers to work over the Christmas period and put forward an incentive and the GMB felt sure the required number of employees would offer to work without any problems. However the Company has ignored this suggestion and is forcing members to work. That has now resulted in the ballot for strike action.
The Company figures for year ending 31/12/2013 shows that turnover increased by 12.9% to £146.3 million and profit after tax increase by 19% to £14.4 million. The 4 Director’s emoluments increased by 12% to £1.2 million in same year leaving average Directors emoluments at £300,000 per year. The company is highly profitable and is looking to increase its profits at the expense of the workforce.”

GMB Members At Haribo Confectionary In Pontefract Given Go Ahead For Strike Ballot In Dispute Over Compulsory Working Over Xmas
Members are fed up with the company’s dictatorial attitude and they will vote for strike action to ensure that they are treated with respect says GMB
The GMB Yorkshire and North Derbyshire Regional Committee has given the go ahead for an official strike ballot of more than 270 members at Haribo confectionary plant in Pontefract over the company attempt to force employees to work over the Christmas Period.
The dates for the ballot will be announced shortly.
Steve Huckerby, GMB Regional Organiser, said “Harribo has gone back on a commitment they made to the workforce that they would not be forced to work over Christmas.
GMB put forward proposals to the company to resolve the dispute but the company ignored them. The company then imposed the changes on the workforce bypassing the GMB consultation process. It is this imposition that has caused this dispute.
The company made this decision taking no account of their staff spending time with their families over the festive season.
The company is highly profitable and is attempting to increase their profit at the expense of their employees. GMB members are fed up with the company’s dictatorial attitude and they will vote for strike action to ensure that they are treated with respect.”
