GMB Calls Upon Bedford Borough Council To Come Clean Over Lack Of Back Pay For Former BUPA Care Home Staff
GMB would like Bedford Borough Council to backdate the living wage for these staff to April 2014 when the council became living wage employer and so treat all of its employees equally.
GMB is calling on Bedford Borough Council to explain the reason for not back dating the living wage to April 2014 for the former BUPA care home staff in line with other council employees.
Martin Foster GMB Beds County Branch Secretary said, “GMB welcome Bedford Borough Council announcement that it would pay the former BUPA care home staff the living wage from 1st February 2015 and its offer for these staff to transfer onto Bedford Borough Council terms.
GMB would like Bedford Borough Council to backdate the living wage for these staff to April 2014 when the council became a living wage employer and to treat all of its employees equally.
As Bedford Borough Council has failed to offer GMB any plausible explanation for refusing to pay these former BUPA staff back pay GMB can only guest that they are choosing not to pay our members rather than being prevented from paying them as they are claiming.
GMB want Bedford Borough Council be honest and give the clear, believable reason for non-payment of back pay rather than hide behind regulations.”
Patrick Hall, Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Bedford said "I welcome the payment of the Living Wage for ex-BUPA care workers and fully support the GMB campaign for this to be backdated to April 2014, if possible, when they became Beds Borough Council employees."
