GMB Calls For Scottish Affairs Committee To Question Northampton Based Employment Agency Over Allegations On Danish TV Of Blacklisting

Justin Bowden, GMB National Officer, said "We know that the employers lied as well as spied: for more than a decade they lied about the existence of blacklisting whilst systematically denying employment to a generation of safety reps and shop stewards.
Since then they have applied the same systematic approach to schmoozing politicians, the ICO and others into believing that blacklisting was a thing of the past.
The new revelations about Atlantco Rimec, which has an office in Northampton, blow that out of the water. The sooner these lowlifes are in front of the Scottish Affairs Committee accounting for their actions the better but if the law provided the right deterrent they would be behind bars.
A former manager of Atlanco Rimec speaking anonymously on the Danish Television DR1 programme last week on May 15th said "Atlanco Rimec does not tolerate workers who have dealings with unions. That is a complete no-no in the company because unions can cause a lot of problems."
Pure Healthcare Staffing Ltd has the same address in Northampton and has ownership links with Atlanco Rimec as do other companies based at the same address. This potentially moves blacklisting from construction into healthcare, care homes and home care.
Atlanco Rimec has already been hit by proven allegations of abusing migrant workers at the EDF Flamanville Nuclear Station construction site near Cherbourg in a court case they lost in Feb 2014.
That is why blacklisting must be made a criminal offence, punishable by imprisonment and unlimited fines and those who continue to resist GMB’s calls for a full public inquiry must immediately think again."

DIRECT EMPLOYMENT IN CONSTRUCTION KEY TO STAMPING OUT BLACKLISTING, SAYS COMMITTEE
New allegations of blacklisting by international employment agency operating in UK
The Scottish Affairs Committee today published a further interim report on blacklisting, with the UK, Welsh and Scottish Government responses to its previous report.
The Committee’s previous report recommended a package of measures aimed at making reparations for past blacklisting and eradicating it in the future, including:
- A process of self-cleaning and paying compensation by companies known to have taken part in blacklisting before they can be considered for further public contracts
- Ensuring that the compensation scheme is developed in consultation with representatives of all the affected workers and making greater efforts to identify all those affected
- Moving toward more direct employment and transparent recruitment, and reducing the use of agency workers
Commenting on the Government’s response, Chair of the Committee Ian Davidson said:
“We are very disappointed that the Government has rejected our recommendation for direct employment on all publically funded construction projects and for transparent recruitment and employment practices – even though they have asked us to take more evidence.
“What we have seen shows clearly that the use of agency workers is a ‘weak spot’ in eradicating blacklisting, and we therefore recommended that direct employment and transparent recruitment practices should be standard for all public sector contracts in the construction industry.
“This concern has been vindicated with the recent allegations from UCATT and Danish Television DR1 that an international employment agency that operates in the UK has been blacklisting employees, using a secret register to prevent workers who complain about pay or who join a trade union getting further work.
“I will be asking the Committee to look at these new revelations with a view to further hearings. The Committee will also shortly be reviewing the process of negotiations, between the companies already found guilty of blacklisting and representatives of their workforces, to ensure that both sides are giving the need for a fair and commensurate settlement the urgency it deserves.” /ENDS
