GMB Comments On Announcement Of 7,500 Job Losses At Bombardier

We intend to engage with the executive at Stormont with a view to putting support measures in place and look at ways they can bolster what is becoming a sector under severe pressure says GMB

GMB, the union for engineering workers in Northern Ireland, has commented on an announcement form Bombardier today that the company planned to cut 7,500 more jobs globally. Two-thirds of job losses are set to come from the company’s rail division with the rest coming from its aerospace division.

The company’s Irish arm – Bombardier Belfast – has said that it was not clear how jobs at the site would be affected. Bombardier employs workers at sites across the UK including Crewe, Plymouth, Derby and Burton-on-Trent.

Michael Mulholland, GMB regional officer, said:

“This announcement is additional to the previous redundancies and it is not yet clear what the impact is likely to be for our members in Belfast. Early reports are that it is possible that the transport decision will be impacted most.

"Our intention at this stage will be to engage with the executive at Stormont once details are clearer, with a view to putting support measures in place and look at ways they can bolster what is becoming a sector under severe pressure. The GMB will work to minimise the impact on our members.”
