Brighton Hospital Demo

Monday, January 7, 2013

GMB demo today at Brighton Hospital as Sodexo fail to sort pay problems for four weeks running.

This is clearly unacceptable and we demand urgent action as this is the worst time of year for people to be missing chunks of their pay packet says GMB.

GMB is staging a protest today (7th January)  as hundreds of low paid staff working for Sodexo at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust have been left without proper pay for a fourth week running.

Since taking over the contract to provide cleaning, catering and portering at hospitals in Brighton & Haywards Heath Sodexo have repeatedly failed to pay their staff their due wages, which left many with no money to pay bills and to buy basic supplies such as food for their families.

Despite repeated assurances, the issues remain unresolved and have now run into a fourth week. GMB solicitors will now be present on site on Monday to speak to members and seek their authority to lodge employment tribunal claims on their behalf.

Details of the demonstration and legal surgery on site are as follows

9:30am Monday 7th January 2013

at Royal Sussex County Hospital,

Eastern Road,

Brighton, BN2 5BE.

At the demo Sodexo employees will sign a collective grievance regarding the company's failure to pay staff properly. There will also be legal surgery in the GMB caravan where GMB solicitors will ask members to authorising them to issue claims at the employment tribunal for unlawful deductions.

There is also a live industrial action ballot in progress which closes next Friday regarding the ongoing redundancy issues and proposed changes to working practices and terms and conditions.

GMB Regional Organiser Gary Palmer said: “This is clearly unacceptable and we demand urgent action. It is the worst time of year for people to be missing chunks of their pay packet.

It is about time Sodexo started to stand by its promises instead of making hard working low paid staff suffer. We will be looking at submitting employment tribunal claims in the coming days.

In a separate dispute with the Company, GMB is also holding a ballot for industrial action over plans to make redundancies on site and to make detrimental changes to terms and conditions and working practices."
