GMB Brighton & Hove Parking Attendants Unanimous Ballot Vote For Official Strike Action In Dispute Over Pay Offer
There is every chance of days of free parking in Brighton and Hove later next month if NSL Ltd does not substantially improve the pay offer says GMB.
GMB members employed by private contractor NSL Ltd as parking enforcement officers for Brighton and Hove City Council have returned a unanimous vote for strike action in a dispute over the latest pay offer from the company.
GMB officers are meeting the 70 staff and their workplace representatives to discuss the results of the official ballot and to plan dates for strike action if the employer does not improve the offer.
Earlier this month GMB members employed as civil enforcement officers working for NSL contracted to Enfield Borough Council also voted for strike action in a dispute over pay. See notes to editor for copy of GMB press release dated 20th November,
Anne Chandler, GMB Regional Officer, said “These parking attendants in Brighton and Hove, lower paid workers with not great terms and conditions who work in all weathers and are subject to a lot of abuse, are determined to get a better deal from NSL Ltd and ultimately from Brighton and Hove City Council.
There was an overwhelming turnout of the staff in the ballot and the vote for action was unanimous. The action will take place unless NSL Ltd offers the 4% increase the members seek.
I think there is every chance of days of free parking in Brighton and Hove later next month if NSL Ltd does not substantially improve the pay offer.”

GMB PARKING ENFORCEMENT STAFF IN ENFIELD VOTE FOR STRIKE ACTION TO SECURE £9.40 PER HOUR LIVING WAGE

GMB members employed as civil enforcement officers working for car parking company NSL contracted to Enfield Borough Council have voted for strike action in a dispute over pay.
The officers are based in Palmers Green and in the car pound in Enfield.
The vote for strike action follows months of fruitless negotiations. Members are paid £8.41 per hour. They seek £9.40 per hour London living wage. The dates for strike action have yet to be set. The action is likely to take the form of a series of one-day strikes.
Richard Owen, GMB Regional Organiser, said “The dispute is over pay and inadequate offers for both 2014 and 2015.
Our members have been extraordinarily patient with NSL, who have been dragging their feet for eighteen months over pay. All we are seeking is the £9.40 per hour London living wage for our members who are out in all weathers, doing a difficult, and sometimes dangerous job, for which they get little recognition.
Enfield Borough claim to be a living wage council, and they encourage their contractors to honour the principle of the London living wage. There is no reason for NSL not to pay a decent wage in Enfield.
Recent settlements with NSL in Camden and Kensington and Chelsea have demonstrated that NSL are capable of reaching decent settlements. It is a real shame that we can only really get NSL to listen to their employees when they vote to go out on strike.
GMB is always reluctant to call out our members in a dispute, but sometimes it is necessary to take that step.
Our members are paid £8.41 an hour. How many people would want to suffer abuse from irate members of the public, or even risk being assaulted, for that sort of pay?”
With such massive cuts being imposed on Local Authorities, I cannot imagine that Enfield Borough will be too delighted to hear that their income stream from parking enforcement is likely to be disrupted in the very near future. “
