GMB Condemns Undermining Of Children’s Social Services At Sandwell Council
We are extremely disappointed by this announcement regarding the future of children’s services in Sandwell says GMB
GMB, the union for workers in the care sector, has commented on the creation of a new Children’s Services Trust to handle children’s social care in Sandwell in the West Midlands.
Secretary for Education Justine Greening has instructed the council to draft and sign proposals by 1 December 2016 to transfer children’s services to the trust. The trust is due to be established towards the end of next year.
In a letter to Sandwell Council, Minister of State for Vulnerable Children and Families Edward Timpson MP said Sandwell Council had “failed its most vulnerable children and young people for approaching seven years” despite a recently released Ofsted report highlighting “positive progress,” in the area.
Darren James, GMB Sandwell Branch Secretary, said:
“We are extremely disappointed by the announcement made by Edward Timpson MP regarding the future of children’s services in Sandwell, especially as an Ofsted monitoring report, which has also been released today, highlights the improvements made by the council and our members with regard to the service for our young people.
“Whilst we are not in agreement with the decision, GMB is committed to working with the Department for Education and the council – who have also expressed their disappointment with this outcome – to ensure that our members are not adversely affected by the creation of a trust which in turn will ensure the best outcome for youngsters in the borough.”
