Lincoln Resident Receives Health & Safety Award At GMB Congress In Nottingham

The job of a Safety Rep is to make their workplace a safer place for GMB members to work in and Shani has clearly achieved this aim says GMB.

Shani Hocking, a GMB Health and Safety Representative in the NHS won a Health and Safety Award at GMB Congress in Nottingham. Shani lives in Lincoln.

Each year Congress makes Health & Safety Awards in memory of a 17 year old South Wales worker Daniel Dennis who was killed in his first week at work in 2003. Daniel was the son of a GMB member and the award is to underline that Health and Safety is not “red tape” but a matter of “life and limb”.

The 97th GMB Congress, comprising of 500 elected lay members, started in Nottingham’s Capital FM Arena, Nottingham today Sunday 8th and runs to Thursday 12th June. There are also 300 visitors and guests. GMB Congress delegates are members who were elected to represent over 628,000 members from every part of the UK and Ireland and who are employed in every sector of the economy.  Congress is the supreme policy making body in the union.

GMB is the direct successor to the Gas Workers & General Union which was formed on 31st March 1889 by Will Thorne. 125 years ago the union spread like wild fire across Britain and Ireland after it liberated gas workers from the unrelenting toil of working twelve hour days for six days a week by winning an eight hour day. This 125th birthday will be marked at the Congress.

Andy Worth, GMB Midland & East Coast Region Secretary said, “The job of a Safety Rep is to make their workplace a safer place for GMB members to work in. Shani has clearly achieved this aim.

Shani has championed dealing with staff shortages and the subsequent potential for assault within Mental Health. This has led to a new system of calling on Bank staff and ensuring shifts are covered. This has resulted in a safer workplace and Shani has become the chair of the Trust H&S Committee. The result of this is that she has recruited more than 30 nurses and a nurse staff rep.”
