Crackdown On Dangerous Illegal Taxis

Thursday, December 15, 2016

Union congratulate Sadiq Khan as more patrols hit the street to stop underground drivers.

A huge crackdown on London’s growing illegal taxi and minicab scourge has been welcomed by GMB.

GMB, the union for private hire drivers, has hailed Sadiq Khan for keeping his promise to hire more compliance officers to tackle the problem.

Four months ago the Mayor of London announced a Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan to improve passenger safety and drive up standards.

A total of 250 new compliance officers will be recruited – with the first 50 already in action. [1]

Mick Rix GMB National Officer, said

“The recruitment of 250 compliance officers will give reassurance to the fare paying public that they are getting into a licensed and insured cab which applies strict standards of behaviour and provides a safe and comfortable journey.

“Hopefully non-licensed, non-insured drivers plying for hire illegally will soon be a thing of the past, and their sub-standard vehicles will be consigned to the scrap heap, instead of spreading pollution and causing a danger the public.

“GMB has a proud record of standing up for and being the voice of those working in this sector.

“Our members want to see good legal standards with the safety of passengers of paramount importance

“The previous Mayor Boris Johnson allowed standards to plummet, with little or no compliance units on the streets.

“Sadiq Khan has listened to GMB drivers and acted swiftly on his promise.

“His actions to make London taxis and private hire vehicles safer can be used as an example to the rest of the country.”
