Cross Infection Contamination Risks

Friday, March 1, 2013

Changed role for porters at Morecambe Bay NHS Hospital Trust increases risk of infection says GMB.

GMB is calling for serious discussions to avoid increasing the risk for cross infection contamination.

GMB, the union for staff in the NHS, is concerned that proposals by University Hospital of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust to change the role of porter will, if implemented, increase the risk of cross infection contamination.

Steve Gibbons, GMB Northern Regional Organiser, said "GMB is very concerned about the possible impact that may spring from proposals to change the job description of the porters. The changes mean that the porters will be expected to do terminal cleans.

GMB consider that staff switching between cleaning duties and patient movement increases the risk for cross infection contamination.

The Trust has faced a number of issues over the last couple of years and has many more to face. Forcing staff to change their roles in an ill thought out way does not fill GMB with confidence that the Trust is up to the challenges ahead.

GMB is calling for serious discussions to avoid increasing the risk for cross infection contamination."
