Croydon Care Home Facing Closure

GMB Concern For 38 Residents Of Avery Care Home In Croydon Facing Closure With 77 Staff To Be Made Redundant By End November 2015

This is a shocking decision that has come totally out of the blue and has hit the residents and staff like a sledgehammer says GMB

GMB, the union for care staff, has received formal notification that 77 employees of Avery Homes Nelson Limited at Oban House Care Home at 42 to 46 Bramley Hill, South Croydon, CR2 6NS will be made redundant between 12 October and 30 November 2015.

The reason given is that the care home is in need of total redevelopment and that it is unsafe for residents to remain in the home while the work is completed. On that basis the company plan to close the home, move the 38 residents and make the staff redundant.

The company are obliged by law to enter into a 30 day formal consultation with the union and the staff on these redundancies. Of the staff to be made redundant 59 are carers and manual workers, 16 are professional and there is one clerical and one managerial member of staff.

Avery Homes run 15 care homes in Cheshire, Hampshire, Kent (2), London,  Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire (2), North Yorkshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Surrey, Wiltshire and Worcestershire (2). See list in notes to editors

Shelia Berry, GMB Regional Organizer, said “This is a shocking decision that has come totally out of the blue and has hit the residents and staff like a sledgehammer.

GMB had not been consulted or even made aware that it was on the cards. The question now arises as to whether the company have been in discussions with Croydon council and the residents and their families in advance of this announcement.

GMB is very concerned what will happen to the residents of Oban House as the research says that forcing elderly, ill and vulnerable residents to move - especially those with dementia - has a serious effect on their and life expectancy.  Their needs should be put above all else and they must be treated with dignity and respect at all times.”
