More than 5,000 back petition handed into Danish Embassy by unions.
GMB, the union for construction workers, has asked the Danish Government to sit up and take notice of ‘exploitative’ undercutting.
Officials from GMB, and sister union Unite, handed in a 5,000 strong petition to the Danish Embassy in Knightsbridge, London.
Danish investments firms have invested pensions cash into the building of major energy from waste projects in the UK.
At these sites, some foreign workers are being paid up to 61 per cent below the agreed industry rate – a practice which is illegal in Denmark.
Allan Toft, from the Embassy, confirmed to GMB he would forward the petition to the Danish Ministry of Employment.
Alongside the petition, demonstrations took place against undercutting at sites in Rotherham, Sandwich and Solihull.
GMB and Unite also travelled to Copenhagen on Monday to confront the vice president and senior vice president of Pensions Denmark who are funding the projects where undercutting is taking place .
Phil Whitehurst, GMB National Officer for Construction, said:
“Today we have made significant steps forward in stamping out the undercutting which blights our industry.
“We have asked the Danish Government now to sit up, take notice and investigate these companies involved.
“Undercutting is an unfair and exploitative practice.
“It means foreign workers are being underpaid, while UK workers are missing out on jobs just because they demand a fair wage.
“But we will not stop here – and will go to whatever lengths necessary to see this through.”
