GMB March And Rally In Brighton On April 6th Over £30m Cuts At Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust.

GMB is calling on the public to support the demonstration taking place this Saturday 6 April to protect NHS Services from Mr Kershaw’s cuts.

GMB, the union for workers in the health service, is organising a march and rally in Brighton on Saturday 6th April 2013 at 11.00am to protest against £30m cuts in the NHS announced last month. The protest is being organized with Defend the NHS Brighton the body campaigning to protect the NHS services in Sussex.

The details of the protest are as follows:

  • Assemble from 11.00 am Saturday 6th April 2013, Outside Royal Sussex County Hospital, Eastern Road, Brighton.
  • 11:30 am: March sets off from Eastern Road to Victoria Gardens, Grand Parade Brighton.
  • 12:30pm Rally with speakers in Victoria Gardens

Speakers: Gary Palmer GMB chair, Lord Bassam of Brighton (Labour peer, member of Shadow Cabinet), Mark Steel (Comedian), Caroline Lucas MP (Member of Parliament for Brighton Pavilion), Paul Maloney (GMB Regional Secretary), Steve Guy (Sussex Defend the NHS), Jozette Power (GMB Shop Steward Royal Sussex County Hospital) and speakers from Unison,Unite  and other health service unions.

Mathew Kershaw took over as Chief Executive of Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (“BSUH”) on 1st April. On 19th March he announced that his first act in the job will be to make £30M of cuts and redundancies within the Trust.

In a statement in Brighton local press Mr Kershaw said that he planned to deliver ‘a set of changes that deliver on quality, performance and financial objectives’ and that he ‘could not rule out the possibility of redundancies as part of a raft of measures needed to make savings”.

Earlier this year GMB issued a public warning of the risk of ‘Axeman Kershaw’ when he was first appointed.

This followed GMB’s direct experience of his disastrous tenure as Trust Special Administrator at South London Healthcare. In that position he recommended the closure of Lewisham Accident and Emergency, the loss of a consultant led maternity service, job losses, the privatisation of services and the sale of assets. This led to 25,000 local staff and service users taking to the streets to protest against his plans.

Rob Macey, GMB Senior Organiser said: "GMB is calling on the public to support the demonstration taking place this Saturday 6 April to protect NHS Services from Mr Kershaw’s cuts.GMB warned the public that the appointment of Mr Kershaw would mean the axe falling on NHS services in Brighton and Hayward’s Heath. Mr Kershaw left South London Healthcare, before implementing his proposals, to do the chicken run to BSUH where he now plans a further dose of the same medicine.

We have now had the first hint of Mr Kershaw’s plans which include up to £30 million in redundancies and cuts to vital services. GMB will take all necessary measures, including balloting union members for industrial action, to prevent these ill-advised plans from being implemented."
