Dispute Looms At London City Airport Over New Ground Handling Contractor Menzies Aviation Unlawful Threat To Cut Pay And Conditions Of Staff On British Airways Contract

Should Menzies go ahead with cutting GMB members’ contractual entitlements on 1st April 2014 we will have no option but to ballot our members for industrial action say GMB.

GMB members working on the British Airways ground handling contract at London City Airport are seeking authority from the GMB Central Executive Council (CEC) to ballot for industrial action should the new contractor Menzies Aviation impose cuts to their terms and conditions of employment on Tuesday 1st April.

These staff on the British Airways contract work on check-in, ticket desk, gate boarding, dispatch, arrivals and baggage tracing. The contract will transfer to Menzies Aviation from Aria Logistics Limited on Tuesday 1st April 2014.

Menzies Aviation has told GMB in a letter that it will cut many of the elements of the contracts of employment from GMB members including health care, travel insurance, shift roster patterns and the cost of uniforms.

There are 73 employees to be transferred to Menzies. All these staff will be impacted if any part of the existing contracts of employment with Aria Logistics Limited is not honoured when they are transferred.

Stephanie Attwood, GMB Organiser said, “When Menzies cuts GMB members’ contractual entitlements on Tuesday, 1st April 2014 GMB will respond by seeking permission from the Central Executive Council to ballot our members for industrial action.

Menzies Aviation’s point blank refusal to honour the full contracts of employment terms and conditions of GMB members when they are transferred from Aria Logistics Limited is illegal. The dispute that will inevitably result will run the risk of disruption to British Airways passengers who use London City Airport . The responsibility for this dispute will lie firmly with Menzies Aviation's illegal action.

The cutting of contractual terms and conditions is a blatant disregard of the laws that protect workers from huge companies such as Menzies Aviation and British Airways being able to line their pockets at the expense of working people.”
