GMB Members Employed By Compass Medirest At Ealing Hospital To Strike On 12 And 13th Feb Over Two Tier Workforce

These vital NHS workers on national minimum rate of £6.31 are 44% below the lowest comparable NHS rate in London of £9.09 per hour says GMB.

Over 100 GMB members employed by Compass Medirest at Ealing Hospital Trust will take strike action on Wednesday 12th February 2014 and Thursday 13th February 2014 in a dispute over pay and conditions. A ballot on strike action closed on 4th February 2014. Over 98% voted to take strike action.

The staff who will take strike action are employed as domestic, catering, porters and help desk workers. The strikes will begin at 6am and finish at 5.59pm each day.

Worker taken on by Medirest since the work was outsourced are offered lower terms and conditions than comparable NHS staff or those transferred under TUPE to this contract. There is a two tier workforce as Medirest do not pay Agenda for Change rates or conditions. Comparable NHS rates range from £7.33 to £8.34 per hour plus London Weighting of £1.76 per hour.

GMB members are seeking an increase in pay as a step towards a London living wage of £8.80 per hour. They are currently paid national minimum wage of £6.31 per hour. They are also seeking an two additional days of annual leave and sick pay for 1 week full pay and 3 weeks half pay. There is now no sick pay

Stella George-Duesbury, GMB Regional Organiser, said “GMB members are seeking an increase in pay as a step towards a London living wage of £8.80 per hour. They cannot live on a national minimum wage of £6.31 per hour.

These vital NHS workers want an end to a two tier workforce. At a minimum they are 44% below the lowest comparable NHS rate in London of £9.09 per hour.

These claims were submitted over a year ago. The employer was made fully aware throughout that GMB would ballot members for strike action unless there was substantial progress towards a living wage. There has been no progress whatsoever in talks.

After the two days of strike action should the employer not make progress to a living wage and an end to a two tier workforce further strike action will be planned.”
