Rochester resident Brian Burton receives the prestigious GMB President’s Award for the “Most Inspirational Project for Making a Difference at Work” at GMB Congress in Plymouth today.

Kent long time GMB member Brian Burton receives an award at GMB Congress in Plymouth today 2nd June for his work for many years on the restoration of the Medway Queen. This ship served at Dunkirk during World War II but thorough going restoration is now underway to bring back into service.

Brian was instrumental on getting the Lottery money and European funding that enabled him to set up workshops to train young people through apprenticeships many of whom have learned many engineering and other skills and go on to find jobs.

Brian receives his award from Mary Turner, GMB National President, on Sunday 2nd June along with other GMB award winners.

GMB Congress, comprising of 500 lay member delegates, is underway in Plymouth Pavilions from Sunday 2nd to Thursday 6th June. These delegates have been elected to attend the GMB Congress to represent over 620,000 members in every part of the UK and Ireland and from every sector of the economy. Congress is the supreme policy making body in the union. Also attending will be 300 visitors and guests drawn mainly from GMB organized workplaces around the UK and Ireland.

Paul Maloney, GMB South East Secretary, said "Brian's commitment to the restoration of the Medway Queen Paddle Steamer is what was recognized by Congress.

This ship saved the lives of 7,000 servicemen and women on the evacuation of Dunkirk. In the process of restoration Brian sought to improve the life chances of young people in Kent which is a clear demonstration of the way that he has spent his life.

He has been fighting for equality and representing GMB members wherever he has worked or been called upon to do so."
