GMB Fights Ban At Windsor Racecourse For GMB Private Hire Drivers

We welcome the response to reinstate access to the grounds at Windsor and level the playing field for all private hire drivers says GMB

GMB, the union for professional drivers, has successfully negotiated full access to Windsor Racecourse for taxi and private hire drivers after they were denied full access to the grounds.

Following reports of rogue cab drivers charging excessively for journeys instead of using a meter, the racecourse granted an exclusive contract to a local private hire service, restricting access for all other drivers.

GMB representatives, Steve Garelick and Sultan Jaffri, advised the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead of the issues with licensing and warned that drivers would have to drop the public at the racecourse entrance, forcing racegoers to walk the last half mile.

Steve Garelick, GMB branch secretary for professional drivers, said “After raising our concerns with Windsor Racecourse, GMB welcomes the response to reinstate access to the grounds at Windsor and level the playing field for all private hire drivers.

We will continue to work with the local government in order to seek a resolution to the negative impact touting has on both customers and the reputations of the majority of honest hard working drivers.

This is the latest step in GMB’s fight to improve working conditions for drivers and Windsor and beyond and it follows reports that Windsor and Eton riverside station have opened the toilets on their premises to Professional drivers – an important as many drivers have no fixed workplace and therefore no facilities.

However, there is still a great deal to be done and in the future we hope to tackle the issue of app-based private hire companies in London being able to collect bookings well outside their licensing area, a real problem.”
