Gary Smith, GMB National Secretary said, “Despite all the change and upheaval in the industry over 95% of British Gas engineers are GMB members. Nobody can lecture GMB about democracy. Under Kevin's leadership over 90% of members vote in GMB ballots. It puts the turnout in elections for local politicians to shame.
Kevin has demonstrated that high levels of trade union membership, decent wages and a successful company aren't incompatible. British Gas engineers are delivering the most flexible and highest standards of service ever and GMB members are the best rewarded in the industry.
Kevin has done a fantastic job on behalf of GMB members in the gas industry and he will be a hard act to follow.
Kevin joined GMB in 1968 and became part of the team of Senior GMB Shop Stewards that negotiate the pay and conditions of British Gas engineers and a position he has held till this day. Kevin was elected on to the National Team, the “8”. These eight GMB Senior Shop Stewards at British Gas are the main stay of the excellent industrial relationship between GMB and the company. Once again a position he has held till this day.”
