GMB Richmond Demo For Living Wage

Thursday, November 21, 2013

GMB Demo At Richmond On Thames Council Today (21st November) For A Living Wage Of £8.80 To Contract Staff Working For The Council

Staff earn as little as £6.31 per hour and are on net take home of £176.00 per week which leaves staff having to rely on hand outs from relatives and taxpayers says GMB.

GMB, the union for staff in local government, is holding a demonstration on Thursday 21st November calling on Richmond on Thames Council to introduce a living wage of at least £8.80 for all staff employed or by contractors working for the council.

The details of the demonstration are as follows:

From 6.30pm Thursday 21st November

York House,
Richmond Road,
TwickenhamTW1 3AA

Earlier this month there was an uprating of the living wage by 25p an hour in London from £8.55 to £8.80 and by 20p an hour from £7.45 to £7.65 outside London.

Paul Grafton, GMB Regional Officer, said "Currently there are workers in Richmond upon Thames employed contractors paid less than a living wage while working for the borough.

GMB brought to the attention of the Council earlier this year that some staff earned as little as £6.31 per hour and were taking home, after tax, approximately £176.00 per week. This is leaving staff having to rely on hand outs from relatives and taxpayers. This is not right in this affluent part of London.

Contractors who refuse to pay the London living wage blame the council for failing to meet the cost of paying this rate in the amount they allocate for contracts.

Richmond upon Thames must put enough into contracts to ensure that no tender is accepted if a living wage rate is not included for any employee who undertakes work be it full time, part time or via an agency when working on behalf of the public in this borough.

A London living wage has now been set at £8.80 per hour. This in itself hardly pays the bills. GMB is calling for all councillors and residents and friends to attend the demo and to sign our petition to ensure councillors sign off and implement a London living wage for all staff employed by contractors with immediate effect”.
