GMB Support Labour New Energy Policy To Replace Failed Regulator And Protect Consumers
Stop dilly dallying and get on with building power stations because if we carry on like this government is doing the lights will go out says GMB.
GMB responded to claims by energy companies that the lights will go out if an incoming Labour Government freezes energy prices from May 2015 till beginning of 2017.
Gary Smith, GMB National Secretary for energy, said "The Labour Party's position is courageous and right.
Prices are likely to double in the next five years and the Tory\Lib government is clearly prepared to stand by and let it happen.
Labour is stepping in where the regulator OFGEM has failed. GMB has being saying for years that the Government itself has to assume the role of regulator and be answerable to Parliament for how it conducts this role.
This announcement will give consumers respite and allow us time to get a proper system of regulation in place that ensures a fair deal consumers and a fair return on investment.
It is time to stop dilly dallying and get on with building the power stations we need. If we carry on like this government is doing the lights will go out.
So we need government to order the building of the power stations the country requires to keep the lights on. It can and will happen if they do.
We need strong leadership on energy not the Tory policy of doing nothing as people freeze."
