GMB Targets DHL/UK Mail

GMB TARGETS DHL/ UK MAIL AFTER DRIVERS FORCED TO ACCEPT ANOTHER PAY CUT OF AROUND £2,000

Delivery firm for M&S, House of Fraser, 02, Ebay and Argos accused of appalling treatment of couriers, which employs a similar model to Amazon.

GMB, the union for couriers, is organising delivery drivers for DHL/UK Mail after the company in the last week have forced drivers to take another pay cut of £2,000.

The DHL owned firm, which delivers for brands such as M&S, House of Fraser, 02, Ebay and Argos, [1] has told drivers based at 55 sites around the country to sign a contract, under duress, detailing the £2,000 pay cut  - or their services will no be longer required. [See note 2 for list of depots]

At the Runcorn depot, drivers were called in one by one into the office on Friday January 12.

They were each asked to sign new contracts and told if they did not they would not be working for DHL/UK Mail by Monday.

Drivers asked for time to look through the new contracts, but were told the contacts had to be signed before the end of their shift.

The new contracts amounted to a pay cut of £2,000 per driver.

In 2016, DHL/UK Mail made a gross profit of £41 million, paid shareholders £5 million and directors £900,000. [3]

Mick Rix GMB National Officer, said:

"GMB have been inundated with calls from members and other drivers at DHL/UKmail over their draconian treatment of drivers.

“The company made healthy profits in 2016, and appear to be aping other parcel firms’ model – paying executives huge amounts while expecting workers to do more as they cut their pay.

“We are urging all drivers for DHL/UKmail to contact GMB, we have lawyers waiting to talk to them."

Stephen Boden, GMB Organiser, said:

“The way UK Mail is treating drivers in its Runcorn depot is nothing short of appalling.

“Forcing self employed drivers to take a £2,000 pay cut on pain of losing work is scandalous.

“GMB calls on UK mail to drop this exploitative of action or face the consequences.”
