Reducing Number Of Trident Submarines Is Reckless In Defence Terms And Will Cost Thousands Of Highly Skilled Jobs In Barrow And Across UK Says GMB
If Labour values shipbuilding and manufacturing jobs the party must make clear it will have nothing to do with this half-witted plan from the Liberal Democrats says GMB.
GMB, the union for shipyard workers, responded to the Trident Alternatives Review by Liberal Democrat Cabinet minister Danny Alexander which is published today (16th July 2013).
Dave Hulse, GMB National Officer for manufacturing, said “The Review is expected to include an array of options short of full replacement, including a proposal that the Royal Navy's fleet of nuclear-armed submarines could be halved to two vessels.
Apart for being a reckless proposal in terms of the UK’s national defences cutting orders for the Vanguard replacement submarines in half could cost thousands of high skilled jobs in Barrow and across the country.
If it is acted upon it would be a massive blow to the country's ambition to regain its status as a world-class manufacturing nation.
If Labour values shipbuilding and manufacturing jobs like its Leaders claim, the party must make clear it will have nothing to do with this half-witted plan from the Liberal Democrats.”
