Harrogate Resident Gets GMB Health & Safety Award At GMB Congress In Bournemouth
Catriona has been inspirational as a GMB Health and Safety rep in ASDA over the past 12 months and if there was one word to describe her it would be "fearless" says GMB.
Harrogate resident Catriona Goldhammer received the 2016 GMB Daniel Dennis health & safety award at GMB Congress in Bournemouth today (Sunday 5th June, 2016) for her work improving health and safety standards at her own Asda store and nationally as a member of the GMB Asda Retail Health & Safety Forum.
At a local level, Catriona has been involved in a variety of health & safety issues from asbestos to personal protective equipment (PPE) she has been so effective that the Harrogate Asda store has hired a dedicated health & safety manager.
Catriona has taken the lead in national discussions on mental health and stress management as a member of the Asda retail health & safety forum and she has performed over 100 store inspections to make sure safety standards are being met at Asda stores in her region.
Each year Congress makes Health & Safety Awards in memory of a 17 year old South Wales worker Daniel Dennis who was killed in his first week at work in 2003. Daniel was the son of a GMB member and the award is to underline that Health & Safety is not “red tape” but a matter of “life and limb”.
Catriona received the award from Mary Turner, GMB National President, on Sunday 5th June along with other GMB award winners.
The 99th GMB Congress, comprising of 500 elected lay members and 300 visitors and guests, started today (Sunday 5th June) and runs until Thursday 9th June at Bournemouth’s International Centre. GMB Congress delegates were elected from the GMB membership to represent over 640,000 members from every part of the UK and Ireland and every sector of the economy. Congress is the supreme policy making body in GMB.
Neil Derrick, GMB Yorkshire & North Derbyshire Regional Secretary, said "Catriona has been inspirational as a GMB Health & Safety rep in ASDA over the past 12 months. If there was one word I could use to describe her it would be "fearless". She has tackled a number of health, safety and welfare issues in both her own ASDA store and across GMB Yorkshire Region.
She has done so despite the fact that her GMB activities have led to her to face constant scrutiny from her store management. She has earned the respect of GMB members and management alike by her refusal to compromise on safety issues.
Catriona is a star.”
