GMB Apprentices join Labour's Sarah Owen laying the first planks as Union donates £10,000 to fund rebuilding Hastings Pier.
This a great moment for Hastings bringing much needed jobs to the area including for members working on the construction as apprentices says GMB.
GMB announced that it is making a donation of £10,000 towards the cost of rebuilding the pier at Hastings.
The announcement was made on March 4th as GMB apprentices from Sussex Coast College joined Sarah Owen the Labour Party Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Hastings to help lay the first planks in the rebuilding of the new Pier.
There has been a huge public campaign for Pier to be rebuilt. It has been closed to the public since 2008 following structural damage and a fire that took place in 2010. The new Pier is due to be completed in Spring 2015.
The project has been supported by donations from the Heritage Lottery Fund, local businesses and the public.
Sarah Owen is a Hastings-born GMB member. She has raised money for Hastings Pier in the past by climbing the 3 highest peaks in the UK.
Sarah Owen said “I made the request to the GMB for a donation. I am pleased that the GMB have chosen to support such an important regeneration project for the area.
As a local person who loved going on the pier when I was young, it was a huge honour to lay one of the first planks on Hastings Pier. The donation from GMB Southern Region with money from thousands of other people who've bought community shares will fund what will be a fantastic cultural and economic asset to our town.
Well done to the Pier team - the volunteers and the workers, the Sussex Coast College apprentices like Dan and Andrew who I met, Hastings Borough Council and everyone else who has got behind rebuilding Hastings Pier.

Paul Maloney, GMB Regional Secretary, said, "I am really pleased that we are able to support the efforts of the Hastings Pier Charity. Not only is this a great moment for Hastings but it is also bringing much needed jobs to the area, including for GMB members who are working on the construction as apprentices.
We also have Sarah Owen, one of our members, standing for parliament and we are delighted to be able to join her fundraising efforts and show our mutual commitment and respect we have for the town.
"I am looking forward to the spring of 2015 and visiting the re-built pier."
