GMB Findings Agree With Need For Investment In School Kitchens
This new information tallies with GMB’s own estimate that around 1-in-10 schools do not have hot meal catering facilities says GMB
GMB, the union for school support staff, own findings tally with the news that many schools will struggle upgrade their kitchens to supply free school meals.
Brian Strutton, GMB National Secretary for public services said, "It's no surprise that government cuts have led to the widespread running down of the school meals service and this new information tallies with GMB’s own estimate that around 1-in-10 schools do not have hot meal catering facilities.
While GMB welcomed the move by the government to commit to free school meals for all infant children we made it clear that their needed to be sufficient funding, not only for schools where they have no kitchen at all but also those who do not had the capacity to provide meals for all.
On top of that, GMB has concerns over staffing in that many school kitchens run on a skeleton staff on minimum wages which needs to be improved if we are to guarantee quality, healthy, hot meals for our children in school."
