Scotland To Resist The 64 Job Losses At Burton's Biscuits Edinburgh Plant
GMB Scotland is to resist the 64 job losses announced this week by Burton's Biscuits at their Edinburgh Plant.
GMB Scotland have entered a 30 day consultation period on the proposed redundancies and met the Company yesterday, Wednesday, 25th June 2014 in the first consultation meeting.
Following that meeting GMB Scotland vowed to resist these job losses with all means available as we do not believe these are genuine redundancies.
Christina Lambie, GMB Scotland Regional Organiser for Burton's said: "Something is not ringing true with the Employer's announcement and we believe it is a reaction to a planned Industrial Action Ballot we are about to hold on Pay."
"Only last month we were talking to the Company about bringing new products to the Site, working in Partnership in making the Plant more efficient and improving the job security of the current workforce. Now we are being told there has to be redundancies before any of the work on improving the Site's performance has started."
"We are also concerned that on the day of this announcement about 64 job losses the Company take on up to 20 Agency Workers."
"At our meeting on Wednesday our Shop Stewards, many experienced workers showed quite clearly the Company could not deliver current or future orders with this cut in the labour force."
"So why the drive to make redundancies now, is it to frighten GMB Scotland members into voting no in the Ballot on Pay? We think it is and we will not allow this Company to throw our members out of work as some kind of negotiating ploy in this Industrial Dispute."
