It’s a real kick in the teeth for people who have been bending over backwards to support the company over the last few years.
Around 400 jobs, or 10% of the 3,800 people at Tata Steel at Port Talbot are to be cut. Tata employs around 7,000 people across Wales with the majority at Port Talbot. In Newport, 600 are employed at Llanwern and 350 at the Orb Electrical Steelworks.
A consultation process lasting at least 45 days will begin shortly.
The Welsh government said the news would be of concern to Tata staff, but was encouraged that the company planned to make the redundancies through voluntary means.
David Hulse, GMB National Officer said, “This is devastating news for GMB members at Port Talbot where there is already high unemployment. It’s a real kick in the teeth for people who have been bending over backwards to support the company over the last few years.
GMB feel it's about time that senior management are held to account. GMB members are seeing their industry run down. GMB negotiators will endeavour to mitigate any redundancies and make sure anyone leaving the business does so on a voluntary basis with the best possible package. What is left and the end of this exercise must be `fit for role` and create a `leaner sustainable manufacturing industry in South wales for our future generations`
This could be the last chance to get it right.”
