PM Must Confront Looming Care Disaster

Friday, January 6, 2017

Care disaster of ‘epic proportions’ looms if Prime Minister continues to avoid problem, union claims.

A letter by three committee chairs urging action on health and social care funding offers Theresa May the chance to stop burying her head in the sand, GMB says.

The missive from the Health Committee, Public Accounts Committee and Communities and Local Government Committee, urges the Prime Minister to reach a cross-party agreement on the future of health and social care funding.

It describes the 'pressing social care challenges facing the country' and calls for an urgent review.

GMB has long warned of a looming funding crisis in social care and recently criticised the Government’s bungled plan to plug the huge black hole using council tax cash. [1]

Rehana Azam, GMB National Secretary, said:

"Health and social care funding is arguably the most pressing issue facing our country - with a crisis of epic proportions looming in the very near future.

"GMB welcomes this new pressure on Theresa May to confront the problem rather than burying her head in the sand - or passing the buck onto local authorities.

“GMB has been warning the Government for years about the vast social care funding black hole – but they wouldn’t listen.

“Hopefully now the PM will be forced to come up with a better solution than the half-baked idea of funding social care through council tax revealed in the recent local government financial settlement."
