202 Job Losses At McVitie’s Glasgow Is Devastating And Wholly Unexpected Bad News In Run Up To Christmas Says GMB
We are seeking an early meeting with the company as they want the restructuring completed by mid 2015 says GMB.
GMB, the union for staff at United Biscuits, commented on the company announcement of 202 job losses at the McVitie's factory in Toll Cross in Glasgow on Friday 28th November.
Earlier this month MURAT Ülker took over the McVitie's factory.
Harry Donaldson, Secretary GMB Scotland, said “The Chief Executive Martin Glenn met with each shift at Toll Cross today starting at 5am. He delivered devastating and wholly unexpected bad news that there would be 202 job losses out of the 700 jobs at the plant. His message was bitter sweet as he also announced the badly needed investment plans that the plant has been crying out for over many years.
This has come at the worst time of year in the run up to Christmas. GMB will support all members at this difficult time.
GMB is seeking an early meeting with the company as they want the restructuring completed by mid 2015.
We have also arranged to meet Margaret Curran the local MP on Monday 24th October. We will be seeking the involvement of the Scottish Government in this. We want the Scottish Government to set up a Taskforce to focus on bringing badly needed investment and development in the Toll Cross area.”
