NDA Needs 'Radical Overhaul'

Wednesday, February 28, 2018

The NDA should be renamed as the Nuclear Development Agency and go forward under new a new role and remit says GMB.

GMB, the union for nuclear workers, says the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) requires a radical overhaul after the Public Accounts Committee slammed a contract bungle which cost British tax payers £122million. [1]

The committee’s report blamed the NDA for running “an overly complex procurement process” which ultimately ended nine years early. [2]

The NDA also drastically under-estimated the scale of the work needed to decommission the sites at the time it awarded the contract, the report said.

This is the latest bungle by the government body tasked with decommissioning old reactors – which has now been forced to end the contract for cleaning up a dozen of the UK’s old nuclear sites nine years early.

In 2016, the NDA was charged with cutting the pensions of thousands of nuclear workers, breaking promises made by past governments dating back to the time of Margaret Thatcher and the privatisation of the electricity industry. [3]

Justin Bowden, GMB National Secretary for Energy said:

“GMB has been saying for years that the NDA in its current form is not fit for purpose.

"The PAC report givers confirmation that the British taxpayer was ripped off due to the NDA’s incompetence.

“The PAC report supports GMB’s long held view that a root and branch re-think of the NDA is required.

"We need to cut out the middle men and have this work done in-house to reduce costs and save the taxpayer money.

“GMB believes a radical overhaul of the NDA is now required - it should be renamed the Nuclear Development Agency and move forward under a new role and remit.”
