GMB Warns That Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) Is ‘unfit for Purpose’ and Requires Wholesale Overhaul after Costing Taxpayer £122million in Clean up Bungle

Wednesday, October 11, 2017

The NDA should be scrapped in its current form and redesignated as the Nuclear Development Agency says GMB.

GMB, the union for nuclear workers, has said the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is not fit for purpose and requires wholesale overhaul after a contract bungle cost the tax payer £122million.

A National Audit Office (NAO) report reveals “fundamental failures” by the NDA led to the authority fudging a £6 billion clean-up contract that left taxpayers with a £122 million bill. [1]

The NAO concludes that the decommissioning authority’s commercial strategy for dealing with nuclear waste is “wholly inappropriate” and needs to be redrawn.

This just is the latest bungle by government body tasked with decommissioning old reactors – which has now been forced to end the contract for cleaning up a dozen of the UK’s old nuclear sites nine years early.

Last year the NDA was charged with cutting the pensions of thousands of nuclear workers, breaking promises made by past governments dating back to the time of Margaret Thatcher and the privatisation of the electricity industry. [2]

Justin Bowden, GMB National Secretary for Energy said:

“GMB had been on the record for years warning that the NDA was dysfunctional under its past leadership and not fit for purpose.

"Whilst most of those responsible for this mess may have gone, the Natinal Audit Office’s confirmation that the British taxpayer was fleeced due to the NDA’s incompetence supports GMB’s long held view that a radical re-think is needed under new Chief Executive David Peattie of the role and responsibilities of the Authority.

“The NDA is the same body charged last year with cutting nuclear workers' pensions whilst it had blown hundreds of millions in taxpayers money on failed contracts across the nuclear estate.

"We need to cut out the middle men and have this work done in-house to cut costs and to save the taxpayer money.

“GMB believes a wholesale overhaul of the NDA is now required - it should be scrapped in its current form and redesignated as the Nuclear Development Agency.”
