GMB RESPONDS TO GOVERNMENT STATEMENT ON FUTURE OF ELECTRICITY SYSTEM OPERATION
GMB, the union for energy workers today commented on today’s new government statement setting out the intention to create a new legally separate System Operator within the National Grid group.
The union said Ofgem should instead be abolished and all regulatory functions should be taken over by the government itself with its regulatory role subject to scrutiny and accountable to Parliament.
Justin Bowden, GMB National Secretary for Energy said:
“GMB has consistently said that the way the energy industry is regulated is not fit for purpose and should be reformed. This tinkering at the edges now being proposed is simply not good enough.”
“Ofgem has been a purring pussycat for years and GMB are of the view that it should be abolished and all regulatory functions should be taken over by the government itself with its regulatory role subject to scrutiny and accountable to parliament. It is high time that all the players in the industry recognised that pretending that there is a market in the energy sector is frankly ridiculous.”
