Strike At Briar Chemicals Norwich Suspended To Allow GMB Members To Consider Improved Offer In Pay Dispute

With the strings gone in the new offer the members may be more receptive to the offer but it is their decision whether to accept it or not says GMB

A strike by 124 GMB members at Briar Chemicals in Norwich which was due to take place today on Tuesday 20th August between 3pm and 9 pm) has been suspended to allow members time to consider an improved offer. The new offer was put forward in talks this morning.

GMB members working in all parts of the plant are seeking modest percentage pay rise that has no strings attached.

GMB members rejected earlier offers and have voted to reject the final offer of an unconsolidated one-off payment and a one-off bonus payment. The company reacted by adding two strings. It has asked for a new "Agreement of Intent" and a new Substantive Agreement by April 2014.

The company’s request for new agreement means that GMB member’s contracts and terms & conditions of employment would be completely open to renegotiation. GMB considers that this is undesirable and unfeasible in the proposed timetable of April 2014.

Ivan Mercer, GMB Organiser said, “Last minute talks with the company led to a new pay offer.

I am putting that offer to the members across the site at mass meetings tomorrow, Friday and next Tuesday. We will know the result of the ballot on Wednesday 28th August.

With the strings gone I believe that the members will be more receptive to the offer but it is their decision whether to accept it or not.”
