GMB Calls On The Government To Intervene To Invest In British Manufacturing For Future Of Hythe Site
Over a 134 staff face losing their jobs following a meeting with Polimeri management yesterday (21st November) when it was confirmed that the site will close says GMB.
GMB is calling on the UK government to start investing in British manufacturing following the shock announcement that Polimeri Europa in Hythe is to close after 50 years of being on site.
Nicola Nixon, Regional Organiser, said “Over a 134 staff face losing their jobs following a meeting with Polimeri management yesterday ( 21st November) in which it was confirmed that the site will close. British manufacturing used to be the pride of our nation it was decimated during the 80's thanks to the Tory government and is now being further eroded by the con dems. GMB calls for urgent investment in manufacturing to safeguard the last vestiges of a once great section of our economy.
Jobs are being lost to overseas whilst our skilled workforce is being marched to the lengthening dole queues.
GMB is currently exploring options in an attempt to retain the site at Hythe but feels that government intervention is desperately needed.
GMB members have been dealt a devastating blow weeks before Christmas, with the recent announcement regarding BAE, the closure of Fords and Vospers. The South Coast is being crushed and our skilled workers thrown on the scrap heap, we need more investment in British manufacturing to secure skilled trades for future generations.”
