GMB And UNITE Members Employed By Contractor ISS At Eight RAF Stations In England And Wales In Strike Ballot In Pay Dispute

When members rejected the company's 1% pay offer ISS refused further talks saying "your only option now seems to be for your individual unions to hold a formal ballot for industrial action" says GMB.

240 GMB and Unite members employed by contractor ISS, who provide food services, cleaning, and other services at eight RAF stations in England and Wales, are being balloted for industrial action in a dispute over pay.

ISS offered a pay rise of 8p an hour from 1 October 2012 and only 2p an hour to those on the national minimum wage of £6.19 per hour. This was overwhelmingly rejected by members.

The official strike ballot has been underway since May 3rd and concludes on May 28th.

The ballot covers members employed by ISS at the following 8 RAF stations: Cranwell, Scampton and Kirton-in-Lindsay in Lincolnshire, Valley in Anglesey, Shawbury and Cosford in Shropshire, Llanwrst in Conwy and Fairbourne in Gwynedd.

Members being balloted do the following roles on the ISS contract on these RAF stations: Chef, Cleaner, Bar Steward, Catering Assistant, Admin, Mess management, Mess Hand, Mess Hand/Kitchen Porter, Payroll Clerk, Receptionist, Retail Assistant, Steward/Stewardess , Storeman/Driver and Supervisor.

Sian McClarence, GMB Regional Officer said: 'GMB and Unite wrote to ISS in March - when our 240 members overwhelmingly rejected the company's 1% pay offer - offering to meet for further talks; ISS refused saying "your only option now seems to be for your individual unions to hold a formal ballot for industrial action".

Our members have bent over backwards to do a good job for the RAF since ISS took over running these bases last year. ISS have thrown that back in their face and thrown down the gauntlet.'

Mike McCartney, Unite National Officer said: 'Our members are furious about the offer from ISS and furious about the way they have been treated. Nobody wants to take strike action but faced with such contemptuous behaviour from ISS we have no doubt they will go the distance.'
