Support staff have expressed their deep anger and have advised me that they are willing to fight this all the way says GMB
GMB, the union for school support staff, has called on the government to step in and take control of Baverstock Academy in Birmingham following the news that the school is set close within a year resulting in major job losses.
The school was forced to announce the impending closure as it was unable to find a sponsor to support it. A petition to save the school has so far attracted over 600 signatures. (See notes to editors for a link to the change.org petition).
Gill Whittaker, GMB regional organiser, said “We have met with staff at the school and are backing them every step of the way with their campaign. The support staff have expressed their deep anger and have advised me that they are willing to fight this all the way.
We will of course be in contact with the school and local authority through the consultation process so hopefully this situation can be resolved.
This decision not only affects staff and pupils but the whole of the community and surrounding areas. Other schools will have to take in more pupils, which will have a grave impact on the education received.
GMB is urging Education Secretary Nicky Morgan to make the right decision and place the school back in the hands of the local authority as its closure would have a devastating impact on the local community.”
