School support staff election pledge

Friday, April 10, 2015

GMB welcome Labour party election manifesto pledge to reinstate national negotiating body for 500,000 school support staff.

Staff and parents should vote Labour to ensure this pledge is implemented after May 8th says GMB.

GMB, the union for school support staff, welcomed the Labour Party election manifesto commitment to reinstate the School Support Staff Negotiating Body (SSSNB) set up by the last Labour Government. See notes to editors for copy of text of the election manifesto pledge on the School Support Staff Negotiating Body set out on page 16 of the document “A better plan for Education“ plus link to pdf of the document.

Brian Strutton, GMB National Secretary for Public Services, said "GMB welcome the Labour Party election manifesto commitment to reinstate the School Support Staff Negotiating Body.

The new body will cover 500,000 teaching assistants, caretakers, secretaries, lunchtime supervisors, dinner ladies and many others in support roles in schools.

The SSSNB will design consistent support staff roles and pay structures in all schools.

Pay and conditions for school support staff are currently determined by each separate local authority or individual school. This has led to multi million pound equal pay compensation pay-outs. Teachers on the other hand have national conditions and there is no reason why support staff should be treated worse.

Research shows that properly deployed school support staff have a very strong and  positive effect on children's education and well-being. This needs to be encouraged and reflected through pay structures that support their professionalism.

GMB was instrumental in establishing the SSSNB the first time round. We call on staff and parents to vote Labour to ensure this pledge is implemented after May 8th.”
