Sellafield management’s campaign of intimidation is not helping negotiations and is making matters significantly worse says GMB.
GMB, the union for nuclear workers, has accused Sellafield Management of intimidation ahead of the second firefighters strike today [October 19, 2017]
Firefighters are walking out between 6.00am and 6.30pm following in a long-running dispute over pay and conditions at Sellafield.
Ahead of the strike, GMB has accused Sellafield’s management on site of intimidation.
GMB says members have been told their jobs could potentially be outsourced and that striking firefighters could face the sack.
Today is the second day of industrial action after GMB’s Sellafield fire-fighter members walked out on Tuesday [October 17, 2017]. A strike in July was averted when GMB believed an agreement to resolve the dispute had been reached with Sellafield management.
Management then reneged on the deal.
Crews at Sellafield work in a fully–fledged fire-fighter role to keep the 10,000 plus workers on site safe, along with the surrounding communities.
They are ready to respond immediately to fires and other emergencies - including paramedic work - which is vital given the potentially hazardous nature of work on the Sellafield site.
In a separate dispute, 3,000 GMB members at Sellafield walked out on September 27.
Unite the Union's 1,100 members at Sellafield have also voted to take strike action in the same dispute.
Chris Jukes, GMB Senior Organiser, said:
“Sellafield management’s campaign of intimidation of workers taking lawful industrial action is not helping negotiations and is making matters significantly worse.
“It’s disappointing to see such disregard for the vital work firefighters do.
“This is just like the aborted merger of Cumbria and Northumberland Fire Brigades earlier this decade, which councillors thankfully pulled the plug on, and which could have led to unnecessary job cuts.
“As ever, GMB remains ready to get round the table with Sellafield management, despite their broken promises.
“The Sellafield Firefighters have remained utterly professional throughout this difficult process.”
