Like everyone else in the country who hasn't had pay rises that have kept pace with inflation, GMB's firefighter members at Sellafield need to pay the bills says GMB.
GMB, the union for nuclear workers, has announced a 24 hour strike at Sellafield by firefighters starting on Monday 24 July 2017 over pay.
The offer from Sellafield would still leave firefighers' pay nearly 5% below the combined increase in the inflation rate since 2009.
GMB members rejected a pay offer from Sellafield in June and voted two to one in favour of a series of strikes.
The first strike will take place from 6.01am on 24 July at the following location:
This will be the first in a series of strikes as part of continuing action against Sellafield to ensure firefighters' pay starts to make up some of the ground lost to inflation since 2009.
Chris Jukes, GMB Senior Organiser, said:
“Like everyone else in the country who hasn't had pay rises that have kept pace with inflation, GMB's firefighter members at Sellafield need to pay the bills.
"The offer from Sellafield Limited falls short of what's necessary to start making up the ground GMB members have lost to inflation to inflation over the last decade.
"The decision to strike has not been taken lightly and fact that this is the first time that GMB members working as firefighters at Sellafield will have taken strike action tells you all you need to know in this regard."

Notes to editors:
Firefighters at Sellafield currently earn £41,466 including shift supplement. The offered 5% pay rise would move pay to £43,539, a 23.8% change since 2009, below the inflation rate between April 2009 and May 2017 of 28.5%.
